"Yu" of "Yushima" means hot water, that is to say "hot springs", and "Shima" means peninsula in this case. The old times this area was a peninsula where hot water sprang up, then called "Yushima". It has more than 1500 years history since 458 A.D. when "Yushima Shrine (Yushima Tenmangu) was built.

It is said that "Hongo" also has 600 years history since the Muromachi age (1336-1573). Now Hongo is one of the best cultural and educational districts in Japan. From subway Hongo 3-chome Station toward Yushima in the southern part, there are a lot of medical equipments and hospitals, and in northeastern the main campus of The University of Tokyo is located.
