Tokugawa Iemitsu, the 3rd Shogun in Edo age, built "Kan'ei-ji Temple" here to pray for a safe and peace at the "demon's gate"(direction of northeast which is superstitiously believed to be unlucky) of the Edo castle. Thereafter, Ueno develops as the temple town, and it crowds since the Meiji era as a door entrance to the north and the heartland of the culture. It is walking range from Yushima to rich green Ueno Park. Appreciate the various arts at museums, commute with the life at zoo…you can enjoy such rich holiday close at hand. Moreover, it takes 51 min. only by the "Keisei Skyliner" to Narita Airport from Keisei-Ueno Station. The arrival to and the departure from Elite-Inn apartments are extremely smooth.

The origin of the name was from a lot of "Okachi" who was the lower class samurai lived here in Edo period. Their job was to guard his general "Shogun", but did various side jobs as well because they had a small income. It is said that the especially famous one's was growing the morning-glory using the garden of the residence for the morning-glory market at Iriya town. Now Okachimachi is famous for "Ameyayokocho"("Ameyoko") a street market district, moreover as jewelry town.

Ueno Park (Ueno area) 

It is a spacious public park having total area about 530,000km2. It was established through an imperial land grant to the city of Tokyo by Emperor Taisho in 1924. The official name of the park is "Ueno Onshi Koen", which can be translated as "Ueno Imperial Gift Park". A lot of historical, cultural facilities exist, with which it forms the region of culture and art. In spring, the e min.ence "Shinobi-ga-oka" is crowded with people enjoying the cherry blossoms day and night. In the "Shinobazu Pond(Shinobazu-no-ike) " located in the south area, many leaves of the water lily cover the surface of the pond, and you can see various kind of waterfowls that swim gracefully between those leaves.

Ueno Zoo (Ueno area) HP

It is the oldest, famous zoo in Japan of opened in 1882. A vast site divides into the west garden and the east garden, and the first monorail in Japan connects both gardens.It keeps a number of animals that exceeds 400 kinds including the rare animals like the Giant panda, the Sumatra tiger and staff.

Kyu Iwasaki-tei Gardens (Ueno area) 

It was built in 1896 as a residence of the Iwasakis who was founder of the Mitsubishi group, designed by a British architect Josiah Conder. Three houses(the European-style building, the Japanese-style building and the billiards room) remain now. The European-style building with two stories and basements is the wooden Western-style house that represents a modern Japanese construction works.

Kyu Iwasaki-tei Gardens

Concert Hall of former Tokyo Music School (Ueno area) HP

It is Western-style music hall that is the oldest in Japan and wooden created in 1890. It is also one of the national important cultural properties. Originally it was a facility of the Tokyo Music School that is the antecedent of the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and opened to the public after transferred to the present place. The music hall existing on the second floor is a stage with the history where famous Japanese composers such as Taki Rentaro and Yamada Kosaku gave a performance. The pipe organ being in of the hall, which is the oldest in Japan, is valuable as an organ for concert use, and char min.g with its velvety tone.

Ueno Tosho-gu Shirine (Ueno area) 

It was built in 1627 by one of the daimyo "Todo Takatora" in which was his premises. Three "shogun"s of Tokugawa shogunate, Ieyasu, Yoshimune and Yoshinobu, are enshrined here. At peony garden in its precincts, "Peony festival" is held from the beginning of April to the beginning of May.

Kan'eiji Temple (Ueno area)

"Old Kan'ei-ji Temple Five-Storied Pagoda" that remains in Ueno Zoo, and "Kiyomizu Kannondo Temple" in the vicinity of the statue of Saigo Takamori are the national important cultural properties. There is also "Benten-do Temple" in "Nakanoshima" island that is in "Shinobazu Pond".

Tokyo National Museum (Ueno area) HP

It is the oldest museum in Japan founded in 1872. There are five exhibition galleries, "Hon-kan(Japanese Gallery) ", "Toyo-kan(Asian Gallery) ", "Heisei-kan(Japanese Archaeology) ", "The Gallery of Horyuji Treasure" and "Hyokeikan(Education Center) ", and other facilities. The total of the collection exceeds 110 thousand including the national treasure and the important cultural asset such as a valuable work of art, books, and the craft goods from Japan and Asian countries.

Tokyo National Museum

The National Museum of Western Art (Ueno area) HP

It was established in 1959 based on the "Matsukata" collections of which core is the painting and the sculpture from the 19th to the 20th centuries such as impressionist schools. In addition to those collection, a lot of Western paintings and the sculpture works from the Renaissance period to the 20th beginning of the century have been exhibited now.

National Museum of Nature and Science (Ueno area) HP

It was established in 1877 and is one of the museums which have the longest history in Japan. A valuable collection exceeding 3.5 million articles is kept in this only national museum of science. The objet of a huge blue whale on the main entrance side is very impressive.

The Ueno Royal Museum (Ueno area) HP

The Ueno Royal Museum

Yokoyama Taikan Memorial Hall (Ueno area) HP

A Japanese painter Yokoyama Taikan used this place as his dwelling and studio until dying at the age of 90 in 1958. Now it is opened to the public showing plenty of his works. It stands by Shinobazu Pond at tranquil atmosphere.

Tokyo Bunka Kaikan (Ueno area) HP

It is the first real classical music hall in Japan opened in 1961 standing just beside Ueno Station. In big and small two halls, the regular concert of Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra whose base ground is here and the performance such as overseas famous opera houses are held.

Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music (Ueno area) HP

A only national university in Japan that aims to train the artists mainly. It consists of two faculties, the College of Arts and the College of Musicology, having 14 subjects, and it appears one after another a lot of artists who represent Japan. The history of this school lasting for 120 years can be felt inside the campus where the brick-built schoolhouse remains.

Ameyoko(Ameya Yokocho) (Ueno- Okachimachi area) HP

Ameya-Yokocho is a shopping street along the elevated railroad between Okachimachi Station and Ueno Station. It is composed of 400 stores or more having about 400m length. Various opinions about its origin of name exist, such as "a lot of Candy("ame") shops opened here", "many shops gathered that sold disposal goods bought cheaply from "American" military after World War II" and so forth. Now shops are centered on some areas herein by each type of business of Food, clothes, miscellaneous goods, jewelries etc. In the every end of the year many people turn out here to buy perishable Foods. Its crowded scenery is often seen on television as a poetic event of the year-end.
